Learn from the fowls of the air

May 16, 2015 By Suhashini

As usual, l arrived at the college earlier and was about to climb the stairs. I heard the flutter of wings and looked up to see a dove flying hither and thither trying to escape frantically. As the stairs was closed by glass panes on all sides, the dove could see the sky. It attempted to fly towards it, but alas! It dashed against the glass panes. I waited patiently for it to settle down. It was heart rendering to see it hurting itself against the glass panes. I could do nothing but to wait.

Finally, it settled down. I took careful steps to approach it. I sensed its fear. I saw its eyes taking stock of me. I caught it in my hand and gently held it. I felt its heart beating wildly. But the bird trusted me. I brought it into the open and let it fly away to freedom. I was filled with happiness.

A few days later, I went through the same scenario; it was a sparrow this time. The little bird was more frightened than the dove and was frantic to find its freedom. I heard the thudding as it dashed itself against the panes. As before, I waited for the bird to settle down. But to my disappointment, it was getting more agitated and the dashing against the panes increased. So I walked away. It must have found its freedom later.

I felt sad that I could not help the sparrow, rather the sparrow did not allow me to help it, may be it did not trust me. I was pondering about the dove and the sparrow. I asked,” Why Lord? Why couldn’t I help the sparrow from hurting itself?”

I heard a gentle voice whisper to me

I help the ones who trust me to help them.
